WASHINGTON - Political circles are agog and the police in New York City are on the alert over the possibility of former president Donald Trump being charged with a crime and possibly even arrested as early as this week.
The only indication of the impending arrest - which experts say will not necessarily see Mr Trump in handcuffs - was a message from him on social media on Saturday, claiming that he would be arrested on Tuesday and urging his supporters to take to the streets.
The charge is that US$130,000 (S$174,000) paid as hush money to adult film actress Stephanie Clifford screen name Stormy Daniels nearly seven years ago over an alleged affair with Mr Trump was in violation of campaign finance regulations.
It is not clear yet whether the Manhattan District Attorney will charge Mr Trump with a misdemeanour or a more serious felony.
If he were to be charged, there would be deep ramifications for the 2024 race for the White House since Mr Trump has declared his candidacy and is a strong contender for the Republican nomination.
As it is, the 76-year-old's rivals for the nomination already face a dilemma - how to differentiate themselves from Mr Trump and at the same time court his base.
