Political tension mounted in Sikkim on the first day of the two-day shutdown called by the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) today.
The Himalayan state is in the grip of protests triggered by the Supreme Court's observation of the Sikkimese Nepalis as those of "foreign origin." Unidentified men hurled stones at the SDF party headquarters, even as the party led by former chief minister Pawan Chamling claimed that the IRB barracks situated at the SDF head office in Gangtok (SDF Bhawan) was attacked by goons of the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM).
The bandh evoked mixed reaction across Sikkim with certain pockets of the state observing it.
