ASHOK VENUGOPAL
A CENTURY TO REMEMBER

In his decorated career so far, the India all-rounder has conquered many milestones to become one of the leading figures in the sport. On Thursday, Ashwin once again came to the fore. Playing in familiar conditions in his hometown, Ashwin cracked a brilliant century to lead India's fightback against Bangladesh on the opening day of the first Test. Thanks to his effort with the willow (102 not out off 112 balls) and valuable knocks by Yashasvi Jaiswal (56) and Ravindra Jadeja (86 not out), the hosts finished the day with a respectable 339/6 in 80 overs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, here.

Before Ashwin's arrival, India were in a spot of bother. The hosts, at one stage, were 34 for three with certified batters - Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli - already back in the pavilion.

LOTS OF FUN: INSIDE PICKLEBALL'S RISE

OUR dentists, some journalists and a few product managers are all part of a WhatsApp group. Every week, one person in the group runs a poll. It's to ask the others whether they are up for playing pickleball later that week. As long as the 'ayes' have a quorum of five, they book a pickleball court at Ice Water Arena in Express Avenue (or in some other facility) in Chennai. A few weeks ago, most of the 21-strong group voted in favour of a two-hour session from 10 PM. So they ended up booking all three courts at EA.

The humane leader who grew his Indian business into a global empire

THE story of local stray dogs being cared for in Bombay House, the headquarters of the Tata Group in Mumbai, is well known. What is perhaps less known is the personal relationships Ratan Naval Tata had nurtured with them. When Tata moved from Bombay House to the Tata Trust offices in 2012 after relinquishing charge as the group chairman, one black stray not only tracked him to his new office but also insisted on visiting him there on the fourth floor every day when he was in office. Nobody knew how the dog knew about Tata being in the vicinity but nevertheless he was always there to greet him.
