The civic body has also undertaken extensive stormwater drain and canal works across Thiruvottiyur and Manali zones
With the northeast monsoon fast approaching, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to rejuvenate 32 ponds in Thiruvottiyur and Manali zones at an estimated cost of ₹87.63 crore. Although the projects were announced in June, tenders are yet to be floated.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at tackling the recurring issue of waterlogging in North Chennai while boosting groundwater recharge. Alongside pond restoration, the civic body has also undertaken extensive stormwater drain and canal works across the two zones.
According to GCC data, stormwater drains are being laid over 214.546 km and canals developed over 10.794 km at a cost of ₹1,216 crore under 25 packages. Of this, 213.897 km of drains and 10.294 km of canals have already been completed at an outlay of ₹1,211 crore, with the balance works progressing.
