Initially, the personnel posted in the Imphal West district staged the protest. Soon, the commandos in Imphal East, Bishnupur and Thoubal districts followed suit. In a viral video, scores of them were seen putting down weapons, one by one. "They laid down their weapons in a symbolic protest against the attack on the ASP's house," a senior police official said. The personnel were reportedly aggrieved that they were not given a free hand in combatting anti-social elements.
The miscreants, suspected to be members of Meitei radical group Arambai Tenggol, opened fire at the house of the police officer Moirangthem Amit Singh in Imphal West district and vandalised it before abducting him and another personnel.
Within hours however, both were rescued by the personnel of police and security forces from a place three km away and admitted to a local hospital.
Their condition was stated to be stable. The police said there was a firing incident at the residence of the ASP. The armed miscreants, about 200 of them, came in vehicles, stormed the residence and vandalised the household properties, the police added.
"On getting information, additional security forces were rushed to the spot. In the police action, two individuals, namely Rabinash Moirangthem (24) and Kangujam Bhimsen (20), sustained injuries and were admitted to JNIMS Hospital," the police said.
