The killer component in tobacco is 'nicotine' that leads to cancer, heart attack, impotence, and other health issues.
Despite being aware of the ill effects of tobacco, consumers often find it difficult to quit.
Now, here is a research carried out by the scientists of Lucknow-based CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), bringing some hope for those who really want to quit tobacco, however, fail to do so due to nicotine addiction.
The plant scientists at CIMAP, succeeded in reducing the nicotine content by 60-70% in Petit Havana Tobacco plant as compared to nicotine content in wild-type plants.
On the basis of their findings after a four year research, the CSIR-CIMAP team of scientists, comprising CIMAP director Dr P K Trivedi, research scholars Dr Deeksha Singh and Shambhavi Dwivedi, now plan to lower nicotine content in commercial varieties of tobacco plant used in cigarettes, cigars, beedi in order to mitigate the hazardous impact of nicotine on health and also to help people quit it gradually without severe withdrawal symptoms.
