Fresh strikes for roads and Heathrow add to rail action
The Independent|December 03, 2022
Unions have announced 12 days of strikes by highway workers that could bring chaos to the roads over the busy Christmas and new year period, and a 72-hour strike by ground handlers expected to disrupt flights from Heathrow from 16 December.

Fresh strikes for roads and Heathrow add to rail action

The PCS union said National Highways employees, who plan, design, build, operate and maintain the country's roads, will take part in a series of staggered strikes from 16 December to 7 January. And there was even more bad news for rail passengers, as the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) said thousands of its members will walk out on 17 December, affecting six train operating companies and Network Rail, in addition to wider strikes already announced.

Rail minister Huw Merriman held talks with union leaders, including the RMT's general secretary Mick Lynch, aimed at breaking the deadlock over the wider action. He described the meeting as "a constructive and open conversation about the challenges facing our railways".
