The mother-of-two, who became famous as the "Bowel Babe", was known for her documentation of life under treatment for her illness, running a blog and Instagram page alongside her hugelypopular You, Me and the Big C podcast for the BBC.
Announcing her death on Instagram, Dame Deborah's family said: "We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Dame Deborah James; the most amazing wife, daughter, sister, mummy. Deborah passed away peacefully today, surrounded by her family.”
She was "an inspiration and we are incredibly proud of her and her work", they said.
They said her final words to the public were: "Find a life worth enjoying; take risks; love deeply; have no regrets; and always, always have rebellious hope. And finally, check your poo - it could just save your life."
Dame Deborah's mother Heather James, who goes by Bowelgran on social media, shared a series of photos of her daughter on Instagram and said: "My heart is broken. Love you forever."
