THIS dress has been on display in two different exhibitions at The Box during the last year.
It was first see in 2022’s ‘Dress Code: Fashion Stories from The Box’, and is now viewable in a large-scale case featuring hundreds of objects from our decorative art collection in our ‘People and Place’ exhibition.
The dress was gifted to our collections in 1996 and dates from 19391945. It’s an example of mid-20th century fashion and a piece of propaganda.
From a fashion perspective, it has been made in what is known as a ‘shirtwaist’ style – a highly popular and versatile 1940s style that was comfortable, flattering and easy to wear.
