WATER quality testing should be carried out more regularly at bathing sites to help alert swimmers to risks linked to sewage dumping, MPs have heard.
Samples are collected from designated bathing waters in England between May 15 and September 30 each year to monitor for certain types of bacteria.
But Plymouth’s Labour MP Luke Pollard, who is a wild swimmer, pressed for an extension of the monitoring period amid concerns over raw human sewage being pumped into waterways all year round.
Storm overflow outlets, of which there are 15,000 in England, currently release excess sewage and rainwater when under strain to prevent sewers becoming overloaded and backing up into homes.
