IT is one of Plymouth's most famous and eye-catching buildings, and now the former home of the city's newspapers is going to be reborn as a hub for small businesses.
Plans are being drawn to carve up the interior of the Ship, at Derriford, so it can be used by multiple companies. It comes after call centre firm Sitel moved out of the building, where it had taken nearly all the office space, and set up camp at Mast House, Sutton Harbour.
It left the property, on Plymouth International Business Park, with 42,000 sq ft of office space to fill.
There have been inquiries from firms eager to move in, but none were big enough to lease the entire building. It means owner Burrington Estates is looking to divide up the vast former newsrooms and advertising offices inside the award-winning structure.
Richard Dixon, commercial sales manager at Burrington Estates, is planning to stage a major free business show inside the former home of The Herald and the Western Morning News, on February 2, 2023. That will coincide with the release of plans showing how the building can be reconfigured.
