TRADERS in a South Hams market town fear for their future, after being told its high street will be shut off for months to allow a crumbling sewage system to be upgraded.
Business owners in Modbury are worried that the work on the main road through the town in ‘rolling sections’ will last longer than anticipated. They are hoping a busy December trade will help them through a difficult start to 2023.
From January 9, South West Water will be carrying out ‘essential sewer replacement’ in the town. Due to its size and location, the work will involve the closure of the A379 in the town centre in rolling sections on Broad Street and Church Street. A diversion will be in place. The water company expects the work will last about five months in total, but the bulk of the work in the main street should last around three months. The remaining work will be confined to side streets.
