THE row over removal and replacement of Armada Way's trees is overshadowing a vital £12.7m investment into the city centre which is vital if it is to be "reimagined" as a residential area, council chiefs say. The authority has revealed ambitious plans to revamp the main artery through the city centre and turn it into an "urban park" supporting businesses and new residents and seeing the return of running water.
The plans involve upgrading the Phoenix fountain outside the Copthorne Hotel, and building a new stream which will flow down the thoroughfare and will be ornamental and operate as a drainage system. There will also be "dancing jets" near the intersection with Cornwall Street, rain gardens and reed beds, and the Sundial will be spruced up.
