AN inspirational woman who takes in pets of domestic violence survivors across Devon and Cornwall has been praised for her efforts. Mary Wakeham first set up Refuge4Pets five years ago to provide a lifeline to those fleeing abusive situations.
With Mary's service, men and women who are in dangerous situations but feel trapped as they have nowhere safe to take their pet, can flee to safety and be assured the pet is taken care of.
Mary, 44, from Liskeard, said: "The worst cases that I know of, pets have been killed. It can be the ultimate form of control.
