TWO landowners have won a High Court challenge against the right to wild camp without permission on the Dartmoor National Park.
Alexander Darwall, a millionaire hedge fund manager, and his wife, Diana, had argued that some wild campers on their land caused problems for livestock and the environment, and sought a court declaration that members of the public could only pitch tents there overnight with their consent.
The couple have lived at Blachford Manor, near Ivybridge, since 2013 and their 3,450-acre estate on the southern part of Dartmoor includess some of the remote Stall Moor, where they have a cattle herd.
Last week’s ruling has been condemned by Plymouth Sutton and Devonport Labour MP Luke Pollard, who said: “I am deeply concerned about the implications of the High Court ruling. Many people in Devon will see this as a step backwards in their access to nature.
