SOUTH Hams District Council has said most residents in Ivybridge are in favor of a new Aldi store after others voiced strong opposition to the plans and said they feared for the future of local businesses.
Ivybridge town council's annual town meeting saw the council urge, people, to object to the scheme. A show of hands at the end of the meeting saw near-unanimous opposition to the supermarket proposals.
The regeneration plans include developing the Leonards Road car park to include the discount food store.
It is estimated the proposed Aldi could create about 30 to 40 jobs for local people, with up to 100 shoppers able to use the store at any one time who are anticipated to make shared trips and use other town facilities, which will be supported by 90 minutes free parking offered at the store.
South Hams District Council now has released a statement attempting to answer and address some of the concerns over the proposed plans.
