A petition titled Save The Trees of Armada Way has now reached over 5,000 signatures. The campaign group STRAW (Save the Trees of Armada Way), which organised the petition, is hoping the council will consider changing its plans and instead save the trees.
Cllr Chris Penberthy (Labour, St Peter and the Waterfront) has written to Cllr Jonathan Drean, the Conservative Cabinet member who is responsible for the proposal, to ask for the operation to be suspended.
The proposal to cut down and replace more than 100 trees in the city centre has prompted an outcry.
