Prosecutor Garth Richardson told Plymouth Crown Court how 22-year-old Harry Brockington of Chesnut Close, Bere Alston had been out with two of his friends to a village pub before they all headed back to his home the early hours of May 6. A short while later he drove his Audi A3 Sport with one friend in the passenger seat and 18-year-old Seth Marks in the rear seat. The court heard that Mr Marks did not put on his seatbelt.
Brockington headed towards a single carriageway called The Downs but increased speed from 30mph up to around 40 to 45mph. His front seat passenger urged him to slow down, but as Brockington came upon a bend he slowed down but not enough, and the car careered off the road and collided with a bank and a wooden garden fence.
A resident, alerted to the noise of the speeding car and the impact, called police and paramedics. Brockingon admitted he had been drinking, having consumed around three pints and two shots, and appeared “very distressed”. A blood sample later found 81micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of blood - with the drink drive limit being 80mg.
