George Day and his then 13-month-old granddaughter, Blossom, were struck when a car failed to stop at a crossing in Devonport Road, Stoke.
The driver of the vehicle, Daniel Bailey, was using his mobile phone at the time of the collision.
Mr. Day is still suffering traumatic flashbacks of the incident which also left him with bruised ribs, damaged teeth, and other injuries.
Fortunately, Mr. Day, who lives in St Jude’s, saw the car coming towards him in time to push Blossom’s buggy to safety before he was struck and thrown up in the air by the force of the impact.
He then endured an agonising wait for an ambulance before concerned police officers took him to Derriford Hospital themselves.
Driver Daniel Bailey, 41, of Woolwell Drive, Plymouth, appeared before Plymouth magistrates in March when he was banned from driving for six months and given nine points on his license after admitting careless driving and using a mobile phone at the wheel. He was also fined and ordered to pay court costs.
