Gale and Newberry edge close Whybrow and Johnson clash
The Herald|January 12, 2023
THERE were a few re-arranged matches between Christmas and New Year in the Brewin Dolphin Mannamead Winter Tennis League and a few Ladies matches to start off the second half of the season.
DAVE AND SUE GALE
Gale and Newberry edge close Whybrow and Johnson clash

On a pleasantly cloudy and warm winter's day, Sue Gale and Sue Newberry played Jenny Whybrow and Sandy Johnson in a rearranged Ladies A match.

Both pairs were pleased to be on court playing again after a short break from matches over the Christmas period. It was a tactical game by both pairs, trying to use all areas of the court and varying shots.

Despite quite a few deuce games and long rallies, it was Sue and Sue who came out on top, winning 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

Starting their first match of the second half of the winter league season, Nicky Trevaskis and Fiona Crutchley had a potentially difficult match against Linda Trebilcock and Hilary Picton, but Nicky and Fiona started well in both the first and second sets going 5-1 up in the first set and 5-0 up in the second.

However, Linda and Hilary always have the ability to come back - which they did in both sets - to bring them to 5-4. Nicky's backhand slice and Fiona's top spin were just too much for Linda and Hilary, allowing Nicky and Fiona to take both sets 6-4.
