Warm sunshine, with a cool breeze off of the sea, a course in tiptop conditions and an intense but very friendly match against old rivals.
The conditions appeared to have distracted the men in blue as so many of the pairings struggled over the early holes giving the advantage to their hosts.
Once their minds were fully focussed, the claw back began so that no one team ever got to a major advantage, save one.
Brian Pound and Keith Field had a fight on their hands to contain their opponents and both had to play near the top of their games. But they eventually took control by the 12th and were never bested again.
Stewart Barnes hadn't put a foot wrong until the 13th when he began to falter and Bill Campbell aggravated a shoulder injury and, in effect, the contest was then over with Pound and Field winning 5 and 3.
As the scores came in, a close result was on the cards as all remaining five matches went to the final hole, but it was not until the last group eventually returning to the clubhouse did the result favour St Mellion with victory 4½ to 21.
