Ranil Jayawardena yesterday warned water company chiefs that, if they do not do more to prevent effluent flowing into open water, he will institute an up to 1,000-fold increase in civil fines.
South West Water, with its 600 miles of coastline and numerous estuaries and rivers, has been fined for sewage discharges over a number of years. The company is being forced to slash £13.3 million off customers’ bills next year as a result of fines imposed by the water watchdog, Ofwat.
In Plymouth, Luke Pollard, the Labour MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, has led a campaign to ensure that Devil’s Point and Firestone Bay are safe enough for sea swimmers to take to the water.
