AS some of you will know, The Box is currently hosting its first exhibition dedicated to dress history.
Drawing primarily from our clothing and textiles collection, 'Dress Code: Fashion Stories from The Box' includes garments from the 1700s to the present day, as well as accessories, paintings, photographs, film and archives to tell stories about fashion, dress and identity.
The title of the exhibition is a play on the phrase. Dress codes are associated with rules and regulations, but a garment can also be coded with meaning about its wearer, community and the social, political and economic context in which it was made.
