THIS undated oil on canvas came in to our collections in 1975. It's called 'The Broken Bridge at Narni' and it was painted by an artist called Richard Wilson.
Wilson was born in North Wales on August 1, in 1713 or 1714. He studied painting in London and began his career as a portrait artist. He then turned to landscapes after spending time in Italy in the 1750s. His move away from portraiture was encouraged by other leading artists who he met in places such as Venice and Rome.
After returning to London, he established a studio in Covent Garden. He went on to become a founding member of the Society of Artists in 1760 and the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768, and showed his paintings in exhibitions at both.
