LEAGUE leaders and last year's mixed winners, Fiona Crutchley and Nick Haley, played Roanna George and Lawrence Nortier in what turned out to be an extremely close match.

Roanna and Lawrence started well, racing to an early lead of 4-1, before Nick and Fiona fought back to even it out at 4-4. The set went to a tie-break which was won by Nick and Fiona.

Roanna and Lawrence made few mistakes as they dominated in the second set, taking it 6-2, but Nick and Fiona won the third on a tie-break to take the match 6-5, 2-6, 6-5.

Katherine Rowe and Les Youens were too strong for Nicky Slight and Dave Bate, winning 6-4, 6-5, 6-0 and Jess Randell and James Driscoll were also in good form to beat fellow club members Victoria Roberts and Mark Skerton 6-1, 6-5, 6-1.

Alex and Alex Stephenson had the match won by taking the first two sets against Janet Butler and Dudley Tolkein before they took the final set in a 6-3, 6-0, 3-6 defeat. Katherine and Les then took on the Stephensons and were comprehensive 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 winners.

When Roanna George and Lawrence Nortier played Pam Ellis and Ming Dai they had to come from 2-0 down in the first two sets to take them both 6-3. The third went to a tie-break which Roanna and Lawrence managed to win and take the match 6-3, 6-3, 6-5.
