PLYMOUTH’S finance chief has admitted the delayed £7m city centre upgrade has taken “far too long” and vowed to get it sorted as soon as possible. As work begins to install “rain gardens” in New George Street, Cllr Mark Lowry said: “We need to get our city centre opened back up and cleaned up.”
Work started on the revamp of New George Street and Old Town Street in 2021 and has been hit with a series of hold ups. Steve Hughes, chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company, said : “We have been disappointed with the delays to this scheme and have been pressing the council for some time to speed things up.”
The council stressed work is now progressing on the project, which has seen large areas of the two thoroughfares dug up and screened with hoardings. It said preparation work is now starting ahead of a “significant” phase in New George Street.
