A COMMUNITY-owned solar farm in the South Hams has helped to fund new outdoor classrooms, plant new woodland and provide an electric ferry for South Devon after making a surplus of more than £100k.
The Yealm Community Energy (YCE) project has been operating for five years, and organisers have now launched a share scheme to bring the 7.3MW renewable energy project under complete community control.
Residents are being invited to apply for shares in the scheme, with expected returns of 6% on investments – while the project will continue to fund environmental projects in the area.
The non-profit social enterprise is run by residents from five parishes in the Yealm Estuary area, including Newton Ferrers, Noss Mayo, Holbeton, Yealmpton, Brixton and Wembury.
