JO CLARKE TURNS THE CLOCK BACK TO EVENTS IN WAR-WEARY CITY IN MAY 1945

Celebrating arrival of peace

PLYMOUTH, as well as many other places in the UK and Europe, has been busy marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day over the last-week with a wide range of commemorative events, from flagraising ceremonies and street parties to lighting beacons and illuminating buildings.

Hundreds of people were welcomed to The Box last Saturday, while other events at The Hoe, Mount Edgcumbe and the Central Library also marked the occasion.

The events have offered been a chance to reflect on the sacrifice so many people made for peace, and an opportunity to celebrate their courage and resilience.
