A PLYMOUTH woman who was diagnosed with leukaemia six weeks after her 21st birthday is aiming the complete the Plymouth Half Marathon in June and raise £1,000 for Young Lives vs Cancer in the process.
Megan Kirkup described the moment she was told she had leukaemia as the "most surreal day" of her life. The 26-year-old is now three years cancer-free, after two and a half years of chemotherapy.
Megan said she was in the best years of her life when doctors informed her of her diagnosis, leaving her with the feeling that her world was crumbling around her. She added that her symptoms then gradually became worse.
Megan became so ill she was unable to return to university, with doctors believing her condition to have been caused by some sort of infection. They realised her illness was more serious than an infection when she collapsed in the shower and temporarily lost her vision.
Megan said: "Being diagnosed was the leukemia was the most surreal day of my life. It was beyond a shock and something you never expect to hear at the age of 21. For me at the age I was, I felt as though I had hit the best years of my life. Young, carefree - but my world crumbled as the words 'you have leukemia' were spoken to me. I really didn't want to believe it was happening to me."
