A CAMPAIGN to bring Plymouth under the control of a directly elected mayor is moving ahead - despite the huge shake-up in local government which could see the city under a regional mayor. The Yesdemplymouth movement, has handed in a petition containing 13,250 written signatures to Plymouth City Council.
The campaign - led by Angus Forbes, husband of ballerina and former Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey Bussell - is seeking a referendum on whether the council should be run by an elected mayor. To trigger a referendum, 9,789 signatures, representing 5% of the electorate, are required under the Local Government Act 2000.
Mr Forbes spearheaded the campaign, which began last summer, and this week said: "We seek to reform Plymouth's current governance structure that has failed us so manifestly.
