Cameras catch more than 16,000 speeding drivers

CONTROVERSIAL 20mph speed cameras installed in Plymouth last year have resulted in more than 16,000 speeding tickets being handed to drivers.

A Freedom of Information request sent to Devon and Cornwall Police has shown that between the three cameras on the road, a total of 16,198 tickets have been issued to drivers for exceeding the new 20mph speed limit which came into force in March last year.

The startling data was recorded between May 9 and December 30. One camera was responsible for 14,359 tickets, another 1,171, and a third 668.

As revealed by The Herald, the initial test period between March and May caught more than 23,500 speeding motorists. Ahead of the cameras becoming fully operational, both Plymouth City Council and Devon and Cornwall Police released a warning to drivers, describing the test period as "troubling".
