BUSINESSES in Plymouth city centre are pleading for the council to sort out Armada Way as soon as possible after seeing a huge drop in trade. Retailers say they have been left in limbo and want action taken to tidy up the area and create walkways until felled trees are removed, and are also calling for financial help and a promise that the £12.7m regeneration will go ahead in some form.
They claim footfall has fallen by up to 25% in Armada Way with sales down anything from 10% to more than 30% as shoppers stay away from the area. Construction work in Mayflower Street, Old Town Street and New George Street is not helping either, they say.
Labour leader Tudor Evans said the entire Armada Way scheme would go back to the drawing board, after taking over the council this month. It has been at the centre of controversy since 110 trees were cut down in March and a subsequent legal battle resulted in the felled trees being left in fenced off piles.
