FIFTY-ONE weeks after his last League One start for Plymouth Argyle, defender James Bolton played a starring role in their 2-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Forest Green Rovers.
Bolton was drafted into the starting line-up to play in the centre of the Pilgrims’ defensive trio and not only did they contribute to a clean sheet, he also scored the opening goal as early as the eight minute.
It was a rare set piece goal for Argyle, too, as Bolton headed home after a corner from Jordan Houghton, and set them on their way to a 17th home league win out of 19 games this season.
Bolton had not started a league game since a 1-0 defeat away to Ipswich Town on March 26, 2022, when he suffered a foot injury which proved very problematic to overcome.
Then, after spending the last few months playing bit parts mainly off the substitutes’ bench, he finally got his chance to return to the starting line-up, and his goal capped it all off.
“It was great,” said the 28-year-old. “It has been a frustrating time. I have been a bit more of a coming on and seeing games out kind of influence on the squad.
“I have not gotten as many starts as I would like because the team is doing so well. To help the team out today, get a clean sheet, get the win and get a goal is what it’s all about, and I’m buzzing.
