PLYMOUTH shop workers and bar staff are being offered bodycams in a bid to cut crime and keep them safe.
Plymouth Against Retail Crime Ltd (Parc) is running a trial until the end of October 2022 which could see hundreds of body-worn cameras given to employees in stores, pubs and clubs.
It comes as the city has seen a rise in shoplifting offences in the past three months and, nationally, police chiefs are drawing up contingency plans to deal with an expected rise in crime this winter as the cost-of-living crisis worsens. In Plymouth, Parc said it is keen to trial bodycams "as a deterrent" to crime.
Ian Warmington, the city's business crime manager, said research has shown that the use of bodycams prevents crime and de-escalates incidents when people are told they are being recorded.
He said: "It's a deterrent. Nationally it has been found that if a situation becomes heated, turning on a bodycam calms it down. We can also help the police by providing footage of incidents. It can be used for crimes, such as shoplifting, and for staff safety!"
Mr Warmington has already given out a "handful" of the cameras and is looking for more businesses to take part in the trial.
He has 25 of the Pinnacle PR7 cameras to hand to businesses but potentially could get his hands on "several hundred" of them.
