150% price hike at public loos

Public loos at Hoe Promenade, Armada Way and Quay Point originally it cost 20p to use, but now it will set you back 50p.

In a statement, Plymouth City Council said the decision to raise the price was part of measures to remedy a £15m shortfall for their finances this year, which the authority says is getting worse.

In 2024, it’s predicted there will be a £37.6 million shortfall.

The council’s deputy leader said the increase will help “to keep [the public toilets] open in the future” – despite the council having spent £600,000 on improvements to the Hoe toilet block in 2021.

The public toilets on the Hoe Promenade are contactless card only, and the toilets situated at Quay Point are cash only. Husband and wife Karen and Nigel Wellard, who paid to use the loo with their two granddaughters on the Hoe, were in favour of the price rise.

Karen said: “It’s the first time we have used it since the increase. We have our twin granddaughters with us today and we thought 50p for the whole family to use the loo is not bad at all.”
