Rashford's redemption Striker silences his critics as England qualify for last 16

Moments after a painless 3-0 win over Wales had eased England into the last 16 of this World Cup, Marcus Rashford wandered over to a large bank of supporters while frenetically pumping his fists. It was a moment of release – and sweet resurrection.

But as the players celebrated, the focus inevitably gravitated towards Rashford. For much of last season the Manchester United striker had appeared hopelessly out of form. Some suggested he had become distracted by campaigning for free school meals. Others that he should be focused more on taking on opponents than the government.

Yet on a balmy night in Doha, Rashford not only scored England’s 100th World Cup goal and his third of the tournament but completed a remarkable comeback.

Rashford’s two goals – the first a free-kick full of speed and dip and spite, the second a shot through Welsh keeper Danny Ward’s legs – bookended a England victory that was also aided by Phil Foden, who scored the second. It also helped fans quickly wash away the memories of a soporific first half.

Afterwards they celebrated by taunting Welsh fans with “You’re going home in the morning.” Yet despite topping Group B, the strange truth is we are still no nearer to gauging a potential departure date for Southgate’s side.
