Rusted cables, loose bolts: Forensic report exposes renovation at Morbi

The oft-repeated charge of gross negligence in the Morbi bridge tragedy has found official confirmation with a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report submitted in a local court saying the Oreva Group sold over 3,000 tickets for the pedestrian suspension bridge, which could take only 125 people, on the day it collapsed.

District Government Pleader Vijay Jani told a Morbi court: "The group sold 3,165 tickets on Oct 30 alone and there was no coordination between ticket booking offices at either end of the bridge." The FIR in the case says around 300 people were frolicking on the bridge when it came unstuck after one of the cables snapped, killing at least 135 people.

Equally startlingly, Mr Jani said, "The report revealed that the cables on which the bridge was hung were rusted.
