After digging two mega tunnels for the Coastal Road project over a period of two years, the heavy-duty tunnel boring machine – Mavala – has been finally dismantled. The sheer size and complexity of the equipment can be gauged by the fact that the dismantling process took two months, starting from June. According to Project Chief Engineer Manthaiya Swami, the main five separated parts of Mavala include cutter head, steel and three gantries. The gigantic machine is likely to be used again for tunnelling work between Orange gate and Marine Lines.
