Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a mammoth rally in Shivamogga in Karnataka amid revolt by senior party leader and former deputy chief minister KS Eshwarappa who has decided to contest as a rebel from Bengaluru.
Eshwarppa is a prominent backward class leader belonging to Kuruba (shepherd) community. He is one of the voices of Hindutuva and one who along with former chief minister and BJP Parliamentary Board member BS Yediyurappa built the party in Karnataka,. Both leaders come from Shivamogga.
Efforts to pacify him ahead of the prime minister's visit failed as he remained adamant and decided to contest as an independent against BY Raghavendra, son of Yediyurappa and sitting Lok Sabha member from Shimoga to "save the party's ideology".
