The Commission also announced the dates of Assembly election to the four states of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. However, in the case of Jammu and Kashmir, it said the Assembly elections will be held later as simultaneous polls would have required a lot of security personnel for the nearly 1,000 candidates who would have participated.
Before announcing the elections at Vigyan Bhawan, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar first made a reference to two new Election Commissioners – Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu – joining the Commission only yesterday. “Our team is now complete. All three of us are here. Our request to the voters now is to get themselves inked,” he said.
