DEATH TOLLS RISES TO 275 IN ODISHA TRIPLE TRAIN DISASTER: OFFICIALS DECIPHER SIGNAL FAILURE AS LIKELY CAUSE

The Balasore triple train collision tragedy in Odisha has not only left the nation shocked and heartbroken, but has also united its citizens in grief, revealing the true spirit of solidarity that is intrinsic to India. The incident that occurred on Friday night, involving Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express, and a goods train, has claimed 275 lives and injured over 1,000 people so far. The accident resulted in the severe damage and derailment of 17 coaches of the two passenger trains, demonstrating the extent of the catastrophe.

In response to this horrifying event, the Ministry of Railways has been vigilant in providing the necessary assistance to those affected. They have established a dedicated helpline number, 139, which is actively manned by a team of senior officers round the clock. This initiative is aimed at providing correct and satisfactory information to the victims and their kin in these trying times, making sure that no individual is left unsupported. The helpline is also intended to ensure prompt disbursal of the ex-gratia announced, which includes Rs 10 Lakh in case of death, Rs 2 Lakh towards grievous injuries, and Rs 50,000 for minor injuries. To date, the Railways have disbursed Rs 3.22 crore as ex-gratia in 285 cases (11 death cases, 50 grievous injuries cases, 224 simple injury cases), showing their commitment to providing timely financial aid.
