China's drive for a "national identity" and to position Beijing at the top of the global geopolitical rankings has taken an unpleasant turn as the governing party continues to mistreat Muslim minorities in Xinjiang and Tibetans in Tibet.
Nobody can hide the brutal face of the Chinese Communist Party's mistreatment of the Uyghur minority in Xinjiang. One of their principles is to "shoot to kill" individuals who attempt to flee. They even sterilised women to control the population and separated children from their families, all of which amounted to genocide. Not only that, but China also attempted to suppress its religious and cultural identity. China invaded Tibet unlawfully in the 1950s, and Beijing pursued a Sinicization campaign with the goal of eradicating Tibet's distinct identity and culture.
