The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre to reply within three weeks to applications that ask for a stay on the enforcement of the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 until the court resolves the petitions that question the Constitutional validity of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. The matter is scheduled for hearing on April 9.
Despite requests from senior advocates representing the petitioners, the Supreme Court declined to suspend the Rules that would enforce the CAA.
The Centre, on its part, told the bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud that the CAA does not take away the citizenship of any person.
The bench, also comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, issued notice to the Centre on the 20 applications that request a stay on the Rules’ enforcement, with a returnable period of three weeks.
The bench stated that they are not expressing any initial view and that they need to hear both the petitioners and the other side.
