AMRITPAL ON THE RUN: BSF, SSB put on alert at border posts

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked the heads of the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) to be alert in the border areas as there is a possibility that Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh Sandhu might cross over the International Border in Punjab or via the India-Nepal border, it has been learnt.

According to media reports, a message has been sent to all units of the BSF and SSB along with two pictures of Amritpal with and without his turban. "It is reliably learnt that Amritpal Singh, the chief of a pro-Khalistan outfit, has been declared a fugitive by Punjab Police.

There is a possibility that he crossed the India-Nepal border or International Border in Punjab. They have been asked to be alert and to sensitise all personnel deployed in the border posts," an officer said.

The Punjab Police on Monday said it has invoked the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against five people linked to the radical preacher's outfit.

Addressing the media, Punjab Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) Sukhchain Singh Gill further said the preacher was on the run and efforts were on to nab him.

He said six FIRs have so far been registered and 114 people arrested in the crackdown against elements of the Waris Punjab De outfit. Gill also said that police suspect an "ISI angle" and foreign funding in the matter.
