Lung charity hits out at health divide

PEOPLE living in areas including Salford and Manchester are among the most likely to die from lung conditions, according to new research.

Hospital admissions for people suffering from conditions such as asthma, pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), are much higher in deprived areas, analysis from the charity Asthma and Lung UK showed.

Of all 549,349 deaths in England in 2020/21, around 9 per cent were due to respiratory causes, of which most were down to pneumonia and COPD, the PA news agency reports.

The report showed that excluding specific deaths from lung cancer and admissions for lung Salford cancer and Manchester, as well as Knowsley and Blackpool, are in the ten worst ranking places for the highest rates of emergency admissions hospital for lung conditions in the UK.
