Emergency services rushed out to Edge Lane, close to the Ashton Canal in Droylsden, after being called out at around 12pm yesterday.
Tragically, the woman died at the scene. Greater Manchester Police says initial enquiries suggest that the male suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction.
Chief Supt Phil Davies, Tameside's district commander, said: "Firstly, our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim.
