Germany had taken just one point from their opening two matches, meaning they had to win and hope Japan failed to beat Spain to progress to the knockout stages.
However, Japan, who exited the tournament themselves at the hands of Croatia in the last-16 on Monday, defeated Luis Enrique's side, winning 2-1, meaning they topped the group. It was a second consecutive group stage exit for Germany for the first time in their history.
