Gundo gives Pep food for thought as Germany lose

With the four-time world champions in cruise control, the City midfielder was substituted on 67 minutes.

Gundogan put Germany 1-0 up from the spot in the first half and had the midfield battle seemingly won.

Japan were limited to sporadic attacks and appeared to be heading for an opening game defeat.

Germany's overwhelming 74 per cent possession throughout the game was largely due to Gundogan and Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich dictating proceedings.
