Second-half tries from Louis Rees-Zammit and Elliot Dee brought victory in the game of the tournament so far, but they lived on their nerves as Fiji launched a thrilling late comeback.
The Pacific Islanders beat England at Twickenham in the summer warm-ups but when it came to the real thing Wales just had their number.
