Irish Water bosses have failed despite months of complaints to stop an obnoxious odour seeping out from a sewerage treatment plant.
The stink is driving the citizens of Drogheda in Co Louth potty.
Now Irish Water has admitted it will be five years before the vital works can be done to fix it.
Louth Fine Gael TD Fergus O'Dowd, who lives about a mile from the plant in the town, branded Irish Water &ldquo;a disgrace" after raising the issue in the Dail.
He fumed: &ldquo;They have failed the people of Drogheda by not resolving the appalling malodour emanating from the Marsh Road Treatment Plant and that their present planned timetable for essential works will not be completed until 2027.
&ldquo;This is totally unacceptable and untenable.&rdquo; Irish Water said it is investigating the odour complaints.
It added it is working as a matter of priority to try and solve the issue.
They plan to introduce a number of measures in the short time before major capital works to cover primary settlement tanks are completed by 2027.
